Departmental Overview
The Ohainle Lab in the Immunology and Molecular Medicine Division in the Molecular and Cell Biology Department at UC Berkeley is looking for a Staff Research Associate (SRA) to perform experiments to support the ongoing research in the lab aimed at understanding how antiviral genes limit infection by HIV and other viruses in human cells. The SRA will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator together with guidance from postdoctoral, graduate student researchers and other SRAs in the lab. The position will use a diverse array of experimental approaches including molecular biology techniques, genomic assays and cell culture techniques under guidance from more senior members. The position also includes general lab support, including implementing safety protocols, lab inventory, ordering and restocking and basic lab protocol development.

Responsibilities
- Perform routine molecular biology assays, including PCR, plasmid DNA preparations, cloning, and sequence analysis.
- Perform genomic assays (nucleic acid extraction, library preparation for high-throughput sequencing, quantitative RT-PCR, CRISPR editing and analysis).
- Assist others with molecular biology assays.
- Perform tissue culture assays, including standard tissue culture cell line maintenance, primary cell isolations, and culturing and biohazardous level 2* work.
- Produce lentivirus and virus preparations.
- Follow universal safety precautions with biohazardous materials.
- Assist others with tissue culture techniques.
- General Lab maintenance duties include autoclaving waste; ordering and restocking supplies; assisting with maintaining lab supplies, equipment, and reagents; and managing chemical inventory and lab safety procedures including BSL2 and BSL2* protocols.
- Assist with lab protocol development, organization, inventories, and safety inspections.
- Offer suggestions to the lab regarding optimization and procedure modifications in collaboration with others.
- Assist in training new lab members on lab procedures and protocols.
- Contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and organization.
- Together with the PI plan approach to experiments and data interpretation.
- Rigorous data analysis and notekeeping.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.
- Contribute to the preparation of written documents.
Required Qualifications
- Some experience in molecular biology assays including PCR, cloning, or nucleic acid extraction.
- Some experience in basic lab maintenance duties and knowledge of lab safety procedures.
- Proficiency with MS Office.
- Highly detail-oriented and self-motivated.
- Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills, laboratory precision, reliability, and clear communication Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
- Must be willing to work with BSL2* virus preparations.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences such as Molecular, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, or Genetics and/or equivalent experience/training.
- >6 months (cumulative) experience working in a research lab.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive experience with molecular biology assays (PCR, cloning, nucleic acid extractions, etc).
- Sterile tissue culture techniques.
- CRISPR-based cell editing experience.
- HIV or virology experience or interest.
- Proficiency in relevant software and data analysis tools.
- Bioinformatics skills.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $24.88 (step 1.0) - $25.95 (step 3.0).
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
